The Challenge

Few providers offer training for secondary mathematics and even fewer geared specifically toward special education mathematics. BOCES teachers wanted new strategies to reach their growing special education and English Language Learner populations.

How We Helped

We provided 2 days of professional learning for BOCES teachers. Due to the rural setting, teachers often teach multiple grade levels and content areas. To address this we focused our workshops around math content found in grades 6-12 and dove deep into how that topic progresses from grade 6 thru high school in the standards. We share practical and easy to implement note taking strategies, activities, and resources to increase engagement for ALL students.

Our first day with just special education teachers was such a success that when we were asked to return for a second day of PD, BOCES invited both general education and special education math teachers.

The Results

Survey results conducted at the end of the workshop show that teachers who attend our PD are feeling confident, equipped, and inspired to reach ALL students more effectively:

  • 100% of teachers who attended our workshop said they were “extremely likely” to use a strategy presented at the workshop in their classroom

  • 67% of participants felt the workshops exceeded expectations

“The workshop brings fresh perspective and activities to promote student team work and lessen math anxiety in the classroom. Activities are teacher friendly and can be adapted across grade levels as well as differentiated to meet the needs of all students. Trainer poured valuable information into us, and her love for helping students who struggle in math shined through.”
